Showcasing East London artists #Let’sDoLondonBetter

Community art campaign breathes life into new green space at Coppermaker Square by Artist Laura Nevill

As part of a community art campaign Let’s Do London Better, Coppermaker Square is showcasing works by some of London’s most exciting emerging female artists. The campaign, created by designer Laura Neville, aims to transform public spaces by providing opportunities for local talent to exhibit their work across the Capital.

Previously having collaborated with Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield on various projects in Croydon and at Westfield London, she has now teamed up with Coppermaker Square to curate a collection of artworks by six local female artists. They will be displayed prominently in the Stratford development’s new green space. Each artist has a link to Stratford or East London – either growing up in the surrounding area or working there.

Laura says: “It is an incredible feeling to be able to give these artists such a prominent platform to showcase their work and reach such a large audience, whilst also giving the people of London a feast for the eyes and soul. Each work in the piece is inspired by wellness and opening up conversations around mental health, which is fitting as parks play such an important part in this. We hope it encourages residents and passers-by to use the garden space and take a moment to stop and reflect in nature.”

The artists being showcased at Coppermaker Square are:

Chloe Isteed @chloe_isteed

A female illustrator and animator based in London/Essex, Chloe is inspired by narratives within the everyday. She uses painted paper collage to capture a sense of connection between people, objects or landscapes. Her piece, ‘Tulip Ballet’, is inspired by colourful fields of tulips dancing in the wind, celebrating togetherness and community.

Ana Curbelo @untepid

An award-winning illustrator and artist who has worked internationally with clients such as Microsoft, BBC and Most Wanted Wines, creating characters with a distinct personal style. Most notable are her illustrations for The Tampon Book, which helped change German law and won several awards at all the major festivals, including a White Pencil in Impact at D&AD, and a Grand Prix at Cannes Lions

Charlotte Robinson @minuscloudnine

Charlotte Robinson founded Minus Cloud Nine in 2014 to create conversations around mental health. Her signature cloud-headed characters represent all individuals on the good, bad and grey days. These illustrations aim to ignite conversations and help people feel heard and safe, serving as a reminder that we not alone. ‘No rain, no flowers’ is a message to ourselves that when experiencing periods of struggle, there may be an opportunity for something else to bloom.

Kate Carter @katecarterart

This London-based artist transforms found imagery into mesmerising mazes made with minimalist lines and injected with joyful shapes to lull you into a daydream. Her line drawings started life as morale-boosting postcards with heartfelt messages to be sent to loved ones during lockdown. Drawing inspiration from nature, the portraits evolved and grew into the designs you see today, arranged like a bouquet of flowers, carefully placed yet still wild.

Gemma Geraghty @gemma_geraghty_makes

An East London-based artist from Ireland. She is an advocate for mental health awareness and believes that there is strength in vulnerability. Her artmaking is an act of catharsis and expression. Gemma’s work explores hardness and softness, darkness and light, sadness and joy and how these opposites are not always mutually exclusive. Her work revolves around tensions; between wanting freedom and the need for structure, what we show of ourselves and what we choose to hide.

Shio @shiodrawing

Shio is a female illustrator and muralist from Japan, who moved from Tokyo to London this May to explore her creativity. Her works always deliver positive messages to evoke various feelings. Through this piece, she tries to tell the audience to focus on your rhythm to do what they like, and be kind to yourself.
